August is in full swing, and there’s still plenty of summer left for us to enjoy! If you have been following me, you know I am a huge fan of farmer’s markets. When fruits and veggies are picked for consumption that has naturally ripened on the vine or tree (seasonal foods), they will have much more of a nutrition value and of course, more flavor.

Eating Seasonally for Better Nutrition

Eating seasonally is not only better for your health, it also promotes balance with both the earth’s resources and its life forms. According to research studies, nutrient content changes in foods depending on which seasons they were produced. By choosing organic seasonal foods, you are guaranteed to have food that was 1) grown closer 2) harvested at the peak of freshness and 3) sold during its season. This reduces spoilage and need for artificial preservatives. Seasonal fruits and vegetables retain more nutrients than their counterparts making them the better choice for your health.

Here’s a wonderful resource to find seasonal foods: the Seasonal Food Guide. This website lists all the fruits and vegetables in season by location.

Getting Started Eating Seasonally and Locally

Best is growing your own food, but if that’s not possible for you. Farmer’s market is the next best thing. Get to know the local farmers and vendors at your local market. They are an amazing resource and some of the coolest people I have ever met.
I like to plan my meals and shopping trips around what is in season; I’m always sure to ask the local farmers what they plan to offer the following week.

Economical and Environmental

Shopping local is not just a cute marketing ploy. Purchasing food from local farmers is less expensive. You avoid having to pay massive shipping costs and inflated prices due to the costs associated with refrigerating foods among other things. This helps cut back on the amount of fuel used which reduces pollution. Buying organic, seasonal, locally grown foods protect our environment.

Next best thing to farmer’s markets is healthy markets (for the most part) such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Make the best decision possible based on your budget and your location.
