It’s easier to face the world when you’re high in spirits, no matter what kind of challenges your day brings. On a bad day, though, people often resort to eating high-calorie, sugary, fatty foods. Doing that rarely improves your mood over a long period.
Dietary changes can bring about changes in our brain structure, chemistry, and physiology, which may lead to changes in our behavior. There are multiple ingredients we can eat that will help stabilize our moods. After all, it’s hard to be in a good mood when you’re feeling hungry or if you’re lacking key nutrients.
Here are three more foods that can boost your spirits.
Oats
Fiber helps to slow down the digestion of carbs, allowing for a gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream to keep your energy levels stable. Stable blood sugar levels are important for controlling mood swings and irritability. Although there are many wholegrains that can have this effect, oats are especially advantageous. Not only do they provide fiber, but they are also a great source of iron. You can enjoy oats in so many forms, such as overnight oats, oatmeal, muesli, and granola.
Coffee
There’s a reason why this popular drink makes our mornings feel a little bit better. The caffeine in coffee prevents a naturally occurring compound called adenosine from attaching to our brain receptors and promoting tiredness. Dopamine and norepinephrine, which are mood-boosting neurotransmitters, are also released. That’s why we feel more alert and attentive after a good cup of coffee.
Avocado
If you’re feeling sad, anxious, or fearful, avocado could help you to feel better. They are a good source of folate, which combat feelings associated with irrational fears and anxiety. Avo’s packs tons of heart-healthy unsaturated fats and fiber. Its omega-3 content is good for mood and contributes to brain health. Another bonus: Celery is considered an anti-depression and relaxant as well!
