Every now and then there are some new health or fitness trends popping up, promising us the best way to stay healthy and lose weight. Whether it’s a new diet plan of a celebrity or Instagram posts of models, they are everywhere, and some have merit, some don’t. I encourage you to be more conscious AND consistent with what you are putting into your body.

You can’t change your diet with every new fad that comes along. It won’t be sustainable. Without consistency, you won’t see results, no matter what you try. But more importantly, just because one diet worked for somebody, it doesn’t mean it will work for you. EVERYONE is different. With my clients, we focus on consistent, sustainable lifestyle habits.

Changing your diet too much or too often and cutting out too many things will be too hard for anyone’s body and mind.

This means that trying to be healthy could actually backfire on you. The solution? Reflect on:
-Where are you now? (regarding health)
-What are your food habits?
-And how clean is your diet?

Some people use the phrase ” Clean Eating”, without really understanding what it means. Clean eating is eating food that is minimally processed. A clean eating lifestyle is knowing exactly what you are consuming. Eating real foods that provide nourishment to your body. Just being conscious about your food can bring tremendous change in your body and mind. Read the ingredients in the food you buy. If you don’t know the meaning of some of them, look them up. Here’s a great recipe for a gentle cleanser for your body:

CRANBERRY CLEANSER

2 tablespoons cranberry juice concentrate
1 cup room-temperature water
Juice from 1 lemon
Dash of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of raw honey, maple syrup, or stevia to taste(optional)

NOTE: If you cannot find cranberry concentrate, you can use pomegranate or cherry concentrate instead

There are 3 ways you can start eating clean today and be more conscious about your food habit or diet:

Know Your Body and Nutrition

On your plate, you should have 50% vegetables (raw, cooked or both), 30% protein, and 20% carbs. There is no one size fits all food strategy. It is important to consult with a nutritionist like myself so they have a clear picture of your health needs and can address them. It’s important that you know what nutrition or elements are best for you to achieve your goals.

Personalize Recipes

This is fun if you love to cook. But it’s also not that hard for some of us who don’t like cooking or are too busy.

Change the ingredients according to your situation or requirements, make it work for you. If you are trying to avoid a specific food group or a particular ingredient, chances are there is either a swap or a healthy alternative. Who knew pureed cashews with a few choice ingredients taste just like a traditional alfredo sauce? I am very sensitive to sugar, so my solution is to substitute Stevia, a sweetener made from a leaf for sugar in a recipe. It takes a bit of experimentation, but it’s so worth it! There are many options, have fun in the kitchen!

Check for Freshness

One of the most important parts of eating clean is consuming whole foods that are fresh and have good nutrition to offer. A great place to start is your local farmer’s market where most produce has been picked the night or day before. You will be blown away by the difference in flavor! Try to choose locally grown food in your traditional supermarket also.

There you go, 3 ways to start small with eating clean!
