This next week is all about your A-game! Want a little preview? There will be tempting holiday treats, endless buffets of tasty meals, and endless nog.

Is anyone else conflicted? It’s tough to be excited about all the amazing food headed our way this next week when we’re all trying to do a little better with our health goals. But this time of year is chock-full with the giving spirit and this week I want to give you my plan for this next week for staying on track with your goals, while still having a few treats!

Make A List & Stick To It

I know I’m guilty of this sometimes, but some weeks I’ll go to the grocery store without making a proper list of things I actually need. What’s worse I’ll go before lunch, when I’m hungry. This is a HUGE no no! Not only did I impulsively buy stuff I definitely didn’t need, I didn’t think proactively about healthy food items for the future weeks.

So, get into the habit of making a list before you go. This forces you to meal prep. Sitting at home and not actually seeing all of the tempting sugar-packed snacks will also aid in avoiding them when you face them at the store. If it’s not on the list, blow right past it.

Brush Your Teeth

Like.. right after supper! It sounds a little strange, but brushing your teeth directly after the third and final meal is a great habit, and it will do a few things. One, it’ll curb your appetite for the rest of the evening, leaving you less prone to snack. The minty taste will actually help you not crave other flavors, aka the late night snackies. Two, and more importantly, it will be a sort of psychological block from diving into the treats later. If you’ve already prepared your mouth for its bedtime routine (brushing and flossing) then you will mentally not want to do that all over again. This keeps your snacking at minimal to none.

It’s Okay To Stray

You may see this and think, “What the heck is she thinking!?” but I’m here to tell you that this holiday season is a special time of year. This means it’s really okay to let go for a meal or two and set the unease aside. Food is one of those historical things that’s brought people together for hundreds of years for all occasions. What’s most important this week is the company you choose to be with during meal times. Don’t toss away your goals completely, but be realistic and please don’t beat yourself up this week if you dare have another cinnamon roll (although dark chocolate would be better). It’s the holidays after all and they only last so long!
