On this day of all things affection and love, let’s not forget to give ourselves a little love by doing the most for your health, even today! Valentine’s Day can still have all of the bells and whistles, no matter where you are or who you’re spending it with and no matter your health goals! Stick to a few of these simple ways to stay on track today.
Start Right
Planning on hitting the town today with a loved one? Maybe some fine dining? Well, consider this: your appetizer can work FOR you today. Go with a lighter option like sharing some salad or going with some different soups. This allows you to fill up a little and not go overboard with the main meal. No shame in taking some leftovers home!
And if you’re having a drink or two? A low-calorie choice like a martini or gin and tonic is your best bet. Those, and of course, a light red wine which is pretty Valentine-y after all.
All Things Red
Indeed, if not today, when do you think of all foods red? Luckily, most of them are great health companions! We’re talking peppers, red onions (not too many for breath’s sake!), tomatoes, and different fruits like cherries, strawberries, and cranberries. Lots of these are pumped with vitamins and antioxidants with minimal sugar intake.
Chocolate Or…
Something a little healthier? To be fair, there is a whole slew of lighter sugar chocolates and treats for V-Day. But if you’re trying to stay on that healthy track, there are tons of other gifts to get/give this year that don’t involve food or chocolate! Some cute little love notes, jewelry, or even the classic flowers or out-of-the-box ideas are all fabulous! And Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be covered in chocolate, but at the same time don’t be so hard on yourself that you can’t enjoy the day. Even a small square (or heart) of dark chocolate can say I love you.
Finally, remember that moderation is the key to any health goal, even today where chocolate and treats dominate. Enjoy yourself and enjoy the time with your loved ones. Keep your health goals in check, and the rest will fall into place.
