Food and aging, is there really a connection? You bet there is! Getting older is inevitable. And with modern science and technologies, our life expectancy has increased. Now the key to that magic million dollar question is how can we age WELL? The answer is simple: Eat Well to Age Well.
I remember being in my teenage years – and I won’t tell you how long ago that was – I could eat anything I wanted and it never seemed to affect my health. I was invincible and had a fire-burning metabolism and I was on top of the world. Well, it wasn’t before too long that all that food in my glory years was starting to catch up with me (we’re talking almost 40 years of binging on copious amounts of sugar). And my health started to take a turn in a direction that, well, let’s just say would have landed me in the hospital or worse.
You can’t control your age, but you certainly can control the rate at which you get there. Everything from the food you eat to exercise, relationships, your mindset and more all affect how you grow old. Small changes in eating habits can lower your risk for many of the diseases associated with aging.
So, here are a few of my tips for eating well to age well:
- Cut the Sugar. Yes, you have to do it – cold turkey if you can – switch to a natural substitute like Stevia to sweeten your foods if you must. Or, simply choose to really savor your foods unsweetened.
- Avoid Processed Foods. If it comes in a box – don’t eat it. Simple, right? (don’t forget farmers market)
- Incorporate high antioxidant foods such as Pomegranates, Spinach, Blueberries, and cold-watered and wild-caught fish.
- Put the Soda and other sugary drinks down. Need a good substitute? Try lemon or lime water with a bit of stevia or better yet I’ve got a great fruity pink drink that has blood sugar-balancing minerals and prebiotics to feed the good gut bacteria. Let me know if you’d like to try it out, it’s delicious!
- Add a good probiotic to promote an optimal gut health environment to balance intestinal yeast. My probiotic of choice is Probio5 because it not only replenishes the gut with healthy bacteria, it’s formulated to go after the nasty yeast overgrowth and bad bacteria for optimum gut health.
Aging well has many factors to take in consideration, but at the core, what we put into our bodies is going to dictate how we navigate through life.
Age well my friends…
To Your Health,
