Spring has sprung, my lovelies. And for us health nuts, that means a lot more sunshine and many opportunities to kick our fitness goals into high gear. You can somehow feel the fresh, new energy that comes with the warmer weather. It’s tough NOT to feel better about things; that’s not to say there aren’t rough times. Some days are still going to be a challenge, and your goals are still going to keep you fighting. So what happens when we meet one of those not-so-good days?
Why, we turn to some natural mood boosters, of course! The right little snack, on even our most cloudy day, will keep us up and at ‘em.
Coconut
I might be jumping the summer gun here, but coconut isn’t just for the beach and tropical lifestyle. Coconut gives that bright and sunny feeling right back to you. It’s filled with potassium and fiber plus it has been known for fighting abdominal weight gain. Even the scent of the coconut has been known to lower blood pressure levels and calm you down. It works to relax and slow your heart rate when stressful situations come to call. Feel free to incorporate coconut into your meal planning like adding to rice or chicken. Even this simple addition can make all the difference for brightening your day.
Saffron
A tad pricey, but totally worth the splurge! Saffron acts as an agent of happiness, being a natural mood stabilizer and stress reliever. It can be added to the precooking stage of a meal, mixed with the water or milk. It’s unique aromas of honey, and floral scents add something completely new to your dish while acting as an instant calmer. Happier days are on the horizon thanks to saffron.
Chocolate
It may come as no surprise when I say chocolate is the ultimate comfort food. Now, this one’s a double-edged sword (because it usually is paired with sugar or milk). For as much as we all love it, sometimes we take a little TOO much love. Moderation is key, keeping your indulgence in the range of about 2-4 squares of chocolate or cacao. And if you can get dark rather than the richer milk, that’s your best bet!
Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, (oh yes, that’s a mouthful) aka the feel-good chemical we naturally create during moments of triumph and euphoria. So take a little comfort in THAT comfort food.. but not too much for health’s sake!
When you’re on the right side of your diet, you see the amazing benefits that certain foods can do. Eating is there for you, not just for health and nutrition, but to brighten your days, when done in the correct way!
