The most wonderful time of the year is in danger. That’s right. With the happiest season of all come the enticing treats. And you can bet each and every one of those are loaded with our dear friend’s calories and sugar. No one wants to cut out all the yumminess of this time of year, and no one has to! It just takes a little more innovative thinking is all (and aren’t you worth it? Of course, you are!). With some easy swaps, you can still have your fruitcake & eat it too!

Let’s Talk Turkey

…or rather what’s in that big bird you’re prepping for Christmas Day. Most of us have maybe heard about white meat versus dark meat, but is there really any stock in this story? You bet your gizzard there is! When preparing a turkey, it’s important to understand that dark meat traditionally has twice as much fat and about 40-50% more calories. A usual portion of that dark stuff is about 250 calories. Looking at its white meat brother, without the skins is only 150 calories! Calorie crisis averted and you still get your turkey fix. You can also eat a larger portion of the white meat with a small amount of dark meat if you want.

Green Beans & Things

For me, green beans have become a staple in my holiday arsenal, mainly in that classic casserole. If you’re looking to cut some calories here, fat-free cream of mushroom soup is a life-saver, saving you about 50 calories per can used. However, fat-free or full-fat cream of mushroom soup can contain some pretty gnarly chemicals and additives. Why not go above and beyond by completely ditching the casserole and just focusing on what we’re really after: the beans!? Sauteeing these puppies with a little light olive oil and garlic will give everyone that pure bean crunch they’ve come to know and love and will save you 100-200 calories.

Booze Blues

I’m going to tell you something here, but don’t freak out! I’m asking you to cut back on your alcohol amount. WAIT! Don’t start hurling tomatoes yet! You can still get your bubbly fix, I promise. For the proud and mighty wine lover, replace a few ounces with club soda or anything spritzy. You’ll still get that amazing taste and save yourself about 40 calories per ounce. Cheers to THAT.

Along with these tricks for your meal plans, it’s so so important to get your booty up and active! When we’re just hanging out too long, our bodies feel bored and crave that pesky particle – sugar. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking workouts, of course, just a simple walk outside or standing while prepping all the food will give you that extra edge this year. Basically, when you combine the little tricks of healthy eating with your drive to stay mobile, you’re unstoppable.
