Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. For most, there is no better feeling than being surrounded by family and friends. The holiday season has become much busier than before; thus, people are spending more time at home. As a result, families often opt to stay inside and spend their holidays together.

If you’re spending Christmas alone or without the kids or family this year, it’s important to try and ease loneliness and focus on the positives. Whether it’s by choice or circumstance, sometimes it’s good to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Christmas by yourself. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Decorate for Christmas

It may seem unusual to decorate when you’re by yourself, but it’s a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and lift your mood. So put up that tree, hang decorations around the house, and string up some lights out front. If you had a special decorating tradition growing up, engaging in this tradition alone can help you feel close to your loved ones.

Buy Yourself a Present

Is there something you’ve wanted for a while? Splurge a little in the spirit of the season. Indulge yourself in something you would normally not buy (it’s okay if it’s a little bit expensive). Get it a few days before and open it on Christmas Day.

Indulge in a Christmas Feast

One of the best things about the festive season is the food. If you enjoy cooking, then make a feast for one. If cooking is not your thing, find a delivery service that can prepare and deliver your feast, or make a reservation at a restaurant that’s not closed on Christmas Day.

Treat Yourself

Pamper yourself, whatever it means to you. Carving out time to do small joyful activities will distract you from dwelling on your situation. Spend the day doing things you enjoy. Put on a face mask, give yourself a manicure, go outside for a nice afternoon walk or run, watch a festive film, paint, or write. It can be anything you typically do to make you feel at your best.

Connect Virtually

Try connecting with loved ones virtually. Just because you’re not with them in person doesn’t mean you can’t send them love. It’s not the same as spending time together in person, but it can definitely help to ease loneliness. Go ahead, and exchange some holiday cheer with your favorite people.

Serve Others

I have a friend who does this so well! Each holiday she chooses to get out into the community and serve meals to the underserved and homeless on Christmas day and other holidays, and has also helped with holiday parties for kids in the foster care system and other groups as well. I think this is the best!

Wishing you a very merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season, and a happy and blessed new year!

[RECIPE] APRICOT CHICKEN

Serves: 4

Ingredients (use organic where possible):

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 10-ounce jar apricot all-fruit jam
  • 2 tablespoons dehydrated chopped onions (or 2 teaspoons onion powder)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions:

  1. Add oil to a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. When hot, add the chicken breasts, then season with salt and pepper. Sear on each side for 5 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Add the broth to the skillet, and use a whisk to scrape any caramelized bits off the bottom of the pan.
  4. Whisk the jam, onions, and garlic powder into the broth, then spoon the sauce over the tops of the chicken. Cover and reduce heat to low.
  5. Cook for 10 minutes or until chicken is just cooked through. Enjoy sliced or shredded with your favorite side dish.

To Your Health,
