Without the right ingredients, it can be difficult to prepare healthy meals at home. Good nutrition starts with smart choices in the grocery store. But because there are so many choices, grocery shopping can be a daunting task. However, when you head to the stores prepared, you will support both your health and money goals.
Finding healthy ingredients doesn’t have to be complicated. Use these five grocery shopping tips for clean eating.
Have a Plan of Action
Unless you like strolling down the aisles aimlessly, going to the stores unprepared can waste time and be unproductive. Before you head out, make a list of what you plan to buy and stick to it. This list should be based on the meals you plan to make for the week.
Don’t Go Shopping Hungry
Empty stomachs can fool your mind to believe that you need snacks and treats that are less healthy when you intended on getting fruit and vegetables. Eat something, even a snack, before you go so you won’t grab things impulsively.
Shop the Perimeter
Most wholesome foods that will nourish your body – such as fresh produce, meats, and eggs – are on the perimeter of a store. Then, work your way through the aisles for other healthy foods like frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils.
Read the Labels
Even if you may already believe something to be healthy, read it if it has a label. Nutrition labels provide lots of necessary information about what it contains and give you the information you need to make the best decisions for you and your family.
Avoid Temptation
While treats can still fit into a healthy and balanced clean-eating diet, they are easy to get out of hand. People tend to forget about things that are out of sight. If you don’t have tempting foods at home, you won’t eat them. Keep moderation in mind when shopping.

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15-20 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients (choose organic where possible):
- 2 T. extra virgin olive oil
- 2 T. Dijon mustard
- 2 t. Italian seasoning
- 1/2 t. garlic powder
- 1 1/2 lbs. sirloin steak
- Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
Directions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- In a small bowl, combine the mustard with the Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Generously coat the steak with the herbed mustard on all sides. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste.

- Reduce heat to medium and cook on one side for approximately 5-7 minutes. Turn steak and cook for another 3-5 minutes, or until steak reaches desired level of doneness.
[TIP]: Use an instant-read thermometer to determine when the internal temperature is 5oF below the desired result. The temperature will continue to rise while the meat rests.
